Jefferson County Democratic Party 2021 Reorg Details

The Democratic Party holds reorganization meetings (Reorgs) in odd-numbered years.  At these meetings, elections are held for all party offices.  The offices to be elected vary by district.  Job descriptions can be found by clicking here.  The document below covers most of what you need to know.  Questions about details not covered here may be sent to [email protected].  This document covers the following topics, click on any of them to go directly to that section.

General Process

The 2021 Reorg will be held via Zoom.  The voting members are members of the County Central Committee.  Breakout rooms will be used for all the sub-meetings as listed under “Meeting Details” below.   Each meeting will have a technical organizer and a chair.  The chair will conduct the meeting according to Robert’s Rules of Order.  A script will be provided.  The technical organizer will facilitate the electronic aspects of the meetings.  The technical organizer is an informal role with no standing.  It is not required to be done by a member of the committee.   We are recruiting people to be technical coordinators.  If you or someone you know is interested, please email [email protected].

Election Process

If you are interested in running for any position within the Jefferson County Democratic Party, you must submit a letter of intent by January 27, 2021, to [email protected].  The letter of intent can be as simple as “I intend to run for the office of _____ for the ____ district.”  If the letter of intent is not received by the deadline, people may run from the floor.  However, this requires a suspension of the rules by a 2/3 vote at the meeting.  Ballots will include a write-in option that allows people to effectively run from the floor.  Each candidate must be given a nomination and a second.  One of these must come from a member of the Central Committee.  Candidates who are members of the Central Committee may nominate themselves.

A Credentials Committee needs to be established.  Members of this committee cannot be voting members of the meeting or on the ballot in that meeting.  We are recruiting people to be on the Credentials Committee.  If you know someone who is not currently a member of the Central Committee who would be willing to volunteer a few hours on February 6, please email [email protected].    As people enter the meeting, they will be asked to identify themselves, preferably by their Zoom screen name.  The Credentials Committee will compare identified attendees with a list of the Central Committee membership.  This will allow us to determine we have met quorum (40%).  The Credentials Committee also assists with balloting.

Balloting will take place using Google forms.  There will be one ballot per meeting with all races.  As people complete the Google form (cast their ballot), the Credentials Committee will validate each vote against a list of identified attendees.  The Google form will display the results automatically.  An actual vote count will only be necessary if the vote is close.

Portions of Jefferson County are part of districts that include other counties.  At the county Reorg, we will elect members to represent Jeffco at these multi-county meetings.  Those districts are identified under “Meeting Details” below.

State Central and Executive Committees

At the county Reorg meeting, elections will be held for the State Central and State Executive Committee bonus members.  Party rules require that an even number of men and women be elected to these positions.  Non-binary candidates will be alloted based on State Party rules.  Jeffco can elect 44 people to the State Central Committee and 22 people to the State Executive Committee.  Please submit a letter of intent to run for either of these committees so your name can be placed on the ballot.  Please include your gender on this letter of intent.  Names will be placed on the ballot in the order they are received.  People may run from the floor as write-in candidates, but this is not encouraged.
